Penny’s Story

I had an abortion when I was sixteen. I got pregnant by my first “real” boyfriend, not so cliche as the first time, but pretty close. I knew that I was too young to have a child. I think it was one of those turning points in my life that helped me to understand that the one person I could count on in life was myself. A few years later, I developed pre-cancerous cells and had a procedure to eradicate them. This procedure can, and in my case did, cause scarring that can block tubes and prevent pregnancy. I should mention that having an abortion did not cause the cancer. Years later, after trying to get pregnant, I discovered that my tubes were blocked. I had surgery to try to correct this, but I now have more scar tissue than before. My husband and I tried in-vitro fertilization three times unsuccessfully. We decided to adopt a baby. Today, we have a beautiful, happy, healthy two-and-a-half year-old girl who is so wonderful. I would not change a thing because I cannot imagine my life without my daughter.
