Clare’s Story

I had my abortion 4 years ago when I was 19. My boyfriend and I had been together for about 6 months when I found out I was pregnant. My mom had made some seafood salad and I became very ill after eating it, which was unusual for me. I told my boyfriend that I thought I was pregnant and he said I was being paranoid, because I tended to be that way. My friend Susan and I went to CVS and got 2 EPT tests, just to be sure. Later that night I took them both and it confirmed that I was pregnant. I had always been pro-choice, but now it was my own case to consider and it was scary. My boyfriend and I talked at length about the decision and knew that an abortion was the right thing for us. Not only were both of us very young (19 and 22) but we were both still in college and I had been drinking a lot and smoking weed before I found out I was pregnant. He flew 3 hours just a few days later to accompany me to the procedure. I was nervous, but it ended up not being too bad – no more uncomfortable than a regular gynecologist visit. I found out I had been 9 weeks pregnant at the time of termination. Other than light spotting for a few days, I didnt feel any pain or have any problems. Four years later the same boyfriend and I are engaged and getting married next August. We have been living together for over 2 years, graduated college together, have good jobs and have 3 pets (furry children!). Although it was not an easy decision, it was the right one and I do not regret going through with the abortion. I am not sorry because I will be able to have a child when I am ready and able to provide the best possible life for them.
