| Pat's Story |
I knew at an early age that I never wanted to be pregnant, give birth
or
raise a child - and told my mother so when I was 8 years old. I
started
looking for a physician to tie my tubes when I was 21, but because I
was
unmarried could not find a doctor willing to perform the surgery until
I was
31 years old (in 1988). I did have access to safe and affordable birth
control from the beginning of my sexual activity at the age of 18. In
1984
I missed a period for the first time ever and immediately contacted a
local
abortion provider for a pregnancy test and immediately upon getting a
positive test result scheduled an abortion for the following week. I
had
no physical problems as a result of the abortion other than cramping
for
about 12 hours afterwards and have had no emotional or mental illnesses
develop as a result of my abortion. I knew it was the right choice for
me
then, know it now and have never had any regrets. All women need access
to
all health care options available, be it abortion or good pre-natal
care.
And all children should be born into the world wanted by the woman who
bears
them.
