| Melissa's Story |
I was fifteen years old when I got pregnant, in my sophomore year of
high
school. Having a child at that point in my life would have meant no
college,
no future, no way of achieving my dreams, or any feasible way of
achieving
happiness by escaping my abusive home life. I would have been completely
dependent on my unstable sixteen-year-old boyfriend (if he had stuck
around) and
my parents for a long time after the baby was born, a thought that I
couldn't bear. I had the abortion without a second thought. I left the
boy,
moved far away from home, and paid my own way through undergrad in
three
years. This would have been impossible with a toddler in tow. I'm now 22
and
in graduate school, and I have never for one second regretted my choice
to
have an abortion.
