Lauren's Story

I had an abortion in the fall of 2003, and here's my story.

To start with, I was 18 when this happened. I had just returned from visiting my boyfriend in Scotland, and when I got home, I found out that my method of birth control (the Depo shot) had failed. I called Planned Parenthood, and went in for a clinical pregnancy test. After the test, the doctor walked in to tell me that I was indeed pregnant, and that there were several options available to me. I knew immediately that I could not carry the fetus to term, and decided that the RU486 pill was the best method for me to end the pregnancy.

There were many reasons as to why I determined that an abortion was the best course of action, the most important one being my health. I have a faulty valve in my heart, along with a small hole. My doctors have told me that giving birth could kill me, as a rapid heartbeat could cause the valve to blow. Also, I have some mental health difficulties, and I'm on 6 different medications to combat these problems. If I was to carry a fetus to term, I'd have to go off of my meds, which would be dangerous to me and the people around me. I do regret not being more careful about my birth control. I had simply forgotten that my shot wasn't effective for a few more days. However, I do not regret having an abortion. There are too many unwanted children in this world already, and I do not want to add to this problem.
