I realized I was pregnant on my 18th birthday. I knew before I took a pregnancy test because I had been extremely nauseous for several days. I was a senior in high school and had already been accepted to college with a full scholarship. Adoption wasn’t something I even considered, mainly because I was constantly sick. There was no way I could have finished school being that sick. In the six weeks I was pregnant my weight dropped to 97 pounds. I literally survived off vitamin supplements because I could not keep any food down. I was physically exhausted and had horrible headaches as well, probably due to lack of proper nutrition.
I took a pregnancy test at a local clinic. When it came back positive I immediately made an appointment to have the abortion. My boyfriend came with me and paid for the procedure (around $350). He held my hand the entire time. The procedure itself was uneventful. The nurses and the doctor were very polite. They used a twilight anesthesia. I halfway woke up during the procedure, for a few seconds, but didn’t feel any thing. I had slight cramping immediately following the procedure. I went to sleep when I got home and when I woke up all the pain was gone. I only bled slightly for a day and had no complications.
My boyfriend and I (Yes, we’re still together) are both in our last year of college now. Neither of us regrets the procedure at all. We were not emotionally or financially ready to raise a child. It didn’t damage our relationship or my health. I am so glad I had the choice to have an abortion. I too am not sorry.
