Amber's Story

I am a twenty-something single mother of a preschooler and a law student striving to make a better life for myself and my young child. My boyfriend and I recently experienced a birth control lapse, which I responsibly covered by taking the Plan B emergency contraception as soon as possible. Within a week of that accident, I started suspecting I was pregnant.

My initial reaction was to research abortions; how modern abortions work and what kinds of options I had. I struggled with whether or not to actually have the abortion, because I love children and I have found motherhood very fulfilling. However, because I am in the middle of law school and my boyfriend is just starting his career in another city, the timing of this pregnancy couldn’t have been more wrong. Furthermore, adoption was out because I didn’t want to have my daughter watch a baby grow and then have to say goodbye to it. We decided that, although at another time in our lives a child would be a blessing, that moment was such a bad time to have a child, and so we chose to have a medical abortion.

The worst part of the whole abortion process was waiting nearly three weeks to get the procedure done. After that, everything went according to plan. I felt “off” for several days afterwards – in large part because I insisted on getting back to work the day after the procedure – but nothing shocking or traumatic has occurred. I am very happy to have my life plan back on track, and have the success of moving on into a lucrative career within my grasp.
