What “Knocked Up” should have been

I’ve had a couple of people e-mail me about Obvious Child, a short film directed by Gillian Robespierre about a young woman who gets pregnant after a post-breakup one-nighter. However, this is not Juno or Knocked Up or any other movie where suddenly two strangers fall in love with parenthood and each other and live happily ever after with baby. In Obvious Child the protagonist, Donna, played by Saturday Night Live cast member Jenny Slate, gets an abortion. While I found the dialogue to be forced sometimes I liked that the abortion was dealt with relatively matter-of-factly and quite realistically–and it didn’t take over the film. It’s not Hollywood, but maybe some will sit up and take notice.

I’m so glad! Knocked up should have been like that! There’s NO WAY I would have a baby with a random guy like that.lol

We are a pro-choice website in UK, with information about abortion in UK.
The site provides links to all the authorised clinics in the UK and explains, in straight-forward terms, the advice, support and medical services they provide. By describing exactly what is involved in the various procedures used to terminate unwanted pregnancies, it helps women to come to their own, reasoned decisions based on calm and impartial advice. The site also features a comprehensive overview of the precise legal position on terminations in the UK and other European countries. Just as importantly, a large part of the site is devoted to advice on how to avoid unplanned pregnancies.
    Thanks for your blog.

Hell I refused to have babies w/guys in committed relationships until I was damn good & ready… [I refuse to support the Hollywood-myth-generating complex by seeing this one, tho' I'm sorry to admit I went to see "Juno" after the tidal wave of positive reviews!]

I was really weirded out by Knocked-Up, I didn’t like it at all. Getting pregnant by a douche-bag like that was what prompted me to get my abortion.

I felt like the movie was way too happy and celebratory about nothing, there aren’t good things that usually come out of a one night stand. Unless you’re one of those people that strive for HIV.

Anyways, what I meant to say is I should rent this movie. Wow. I’m long-winded..

Hey! My one night stand has resulted in a one-year relationship so far.

Knocked Up was totally unrealistic and kind of sexist, as most Apatow flicks are. Glad to see my gender is the shrill harpies meant to drag boys away from having fun and into adulthood.

Thank you so much for posting this. I had an abortion three days ago, and there is so little out there to alleviate the heavy, I-can’t-believe-this-just-happened-to-me feeling I’ve been experiencing. That film totally lifted me out of my fog. What a great gift!
